To begin, Lordy! I have never, ever, been this captivated and genuinely frightened by a horror movie. Ever. I make films, I consider myself to be a student of cinema and so, not one to be frightened by cliché abrupt violining, and unexpected imagery that are slasher film staples. This film is written and directed by Bryan Bertino, a completely fresh face in the industry, took me on a ride I would expect only by one of the greats. Certainly better than any of the countless scared teenagers in a school/mall/cabin/Mayan ruins "films" that have flooded theaters in recent years.
Why exactly does it stand out? The cinematography. The set dressing. The locale. Whatever. The misé-en-scene would be the film person term for it, and it was unexpectedly great.
The tension that quickly builds never loses speed. Not until the credits roll in fact. There are a few speed bumps in the first twenty-odd minutes, as the character's relationship is introduced in flash-back. Some of Liv Tyler's acting... is the teensiest bit stale, but it didn't bring down the film as a whole.
It's been months now since I started writing this and actually saw the film, so I'll stop here and just recommend seeing it when it hits Blu-Ray/DVD, if it hasn't already... I am back to universidad, so relevant posts will be popping up more frequently pretty quick here.
